Itoi on the Radio, Eight Melodies Ball Track, & MOTHER’s Day Orchestra Aftermath

Itoi Featured on “Nakamura Shichinosuke’s Rajisuke”!

Last weekend MOTHER series creator Shigesato Itoi was invited as a guest on Nakamura Shichinosuke‘s radio talk show. If you aren’t familiar with him, Shichinosuke-san is an international star from Tokyo. He had humble beginnings playing both male and female roles in Kabuki theatre back in 1986. Overseas, you may recall seeing him in the 2003 period drama The Last Samurai as Emperor Meiji, or perhaps heard his voice in the 2013 Studio Ghibli film The Tale of the Princess Kaguya! However, within Japan Shinchinosuke is most well known for his radio show where he talks openly about his private life and hobbies. Often, they invite guests, and this time Itoi-san himself happened to be the one invited!

It seemed like a natural decision, as Shichinosuke-san is a huge fan of MOTHER. Upon entering the studio, he nervously said to Itoi, “It’s so nice to meet you!” before even saying “hello.” Itoi noticed the tension in him and jokingly responded with, “Well, it’s not very nice to meet you.”

The two began to talk about Itoi’s career in depth as well as the history and legacy of the MOTHER series. Due to its length, the broadcast was split across two days (October 1st and 2nd.)

Since Rajisuke is not an international broadcast, it is unlikely the episode will make its way online due to Japanese copyright law. Nonetheless, it’s exciting to see Itoi-san back on the radio after all these years! You can check out the Hobonichi‘s original post about it here.

Fan creates an Infinite Eight Melodies Musical Track Ball Machine

Master Belch modeled in 3D, as featured in the track ball machine.

Over the last 24 hours, this beautiful infinite Eight Melodies track ball machine that recounts Ness and friends’ adventure has made its way across the fandom on Twitter. A Japanese musician and 3D modeller named Ichikawa crafted it himself, and it isn’t his first time making something like this either! A quick visit to his profile shows a plethora of amazing 3D MOTHER models, including Mr. Saturn and the Runaway Dog! There are other fantastic 3D model and musical hybrid videos too, such as one featuring Pikachu playing the mandocello in the streets of Sapporo.

Ichikawa has catalogued his process in creating these animations in a series of tweets. According to him, he doesn’t aspire to become an animator, but rather does it for fun as it “infinitely melts the time away.”

Despite just being a pass time, his skills continue to impress fans worldwide. Shigesato Itoi even took notice of the track ball, pondering “It seems to me there’s a reason “Smile and Tears” was chosen as the name for “Eight Melodies.” The next morning he retweeted it once again, “I’m watching it again the next day. I want to make this my alarm.”

Please check out Ichikawa’s wonderful creation. Perhaps you’ll shed a tear too!

MOTHER’s Day Wind Orchestra a Resounding Success!

The orchestra on full display!

On October 1st (coincidentally the same day as Itoi-san’s broadcast) the MOTHER’s Day Wind Orchestra finally happened! Unfortunately, it could not be recorded due to copyright law, but for all 700 people that attended the performance, the orchestra had one thing to say: “We hope the players and members of the audience capture this memory on a page of this adventure called life.”

The concert ended with two encore performances: “Good Friends, Bad Friends” and an original song called “PK Farewell”, titled after Poo’s newfound ability in the game’s epilogue. Fans were thrilled at the love and passion but behind this entire production, with one claiming you could “feel the love for MOTHER right until the very end.”

Hopefully, there’s a possibility for the band to perform again in the future! But until then, please send forward all your PK Love towards Oniku-sensei and all the performers who made this possible!
