After the sad news of YouTube music uploader GilvaSunner’s MOTHER 3 playlist being blocked by Nintendo along with most of GilvaSunner’s other uploads, we finished finalizing our own complete, high-quality MOTHER 3 rips of all the game’s music and sound effects!

Staff member ArnoldKMTR ripped the entirety of MOTHER 3’s music and sounds in FLAC format not too long ago, and Kody NOKOLO contributed by figuring out the naming scheme for and categorizing the rips.

Nintendo’s 2.9.2022 Nintendo Direct featured the announcement of not just one, but two MOTHER games releasing on the Nintendo Switch! Now MOTHER, EarthBound Beginnings, MOTHER 2, and EarthBound are all playable through Nintendo Switch Online. And, before the Direct, Hard4Games released a new 1995 interview with Shigesato Itoi!

Being immortalized through a video-game is a surreal honor very few get to experience. One of the most famous examples often cited is the Chris Houlihan room from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, but little do most MOTHER fans know that MOTHER 3 was nearly added to the list!

This is a translated version of a 2020 interview with the applicant for the “MOTHER 3 Performer Contest” from 25 years ago, who goes by the name MT. The original interview was conducted by the Japanese media site Netlab.

The MOTHER 3 development discoveries never stop, don’t they? It was only a few years ago now that Lorenzooone, the user behind the Italian Fan Translation unearthed the extended debug rooms. If you happened to think that would be the end – prepare to be amazed!

On March 2nd, 2022, hacking community PPG restored additional debug menus for the overworld and battle system, pulling the curtains back on a handful of new development info on the game!

Hobonichi launched its newest line of merchandise, MOTHER 2 screen replicas! These are large, professional printed replicas of classic MOTHER 2 areas, framed in wood ready to be hung in your home!

Since the release of both EarthBound Beginnings and EarthBound on Nintendo Switch’s online service, there’s been a lot of discussion surrounding the game. Although most of it’s positive, there is a spark of debate among some of EarthBound’s more cumbersome design choices, from people first experiencing the games.

Kody showcases brand new, high quality scans of all the MOTHER parts from Famicom 4koma Manga Kingdom 1,including translations of a couple pages!

The second in Kody’s series of weekly scan releases until the 2022 Mother Direct is Game Geniuses ’98: a book filled with images of and information about various game developers. Satoshi Tajiri, Yuji Horii, Gunpei Yokoi, Shigesato Itoi, and so many more are all featured!

Happy 16th anniversary to MOTHER 3! Kody showcases scans of an interview that was already known, but never was scanned in full. There’s even more information than what was known too!

A few days ago, community member PineappleCarl discovered concept art posted over a year ago or more by MOTHER 3 Event and Battle Designer Akiyuki Suzuki on their Twitter page! There were even a couple development notes in their previous posts that Kody translated below.

In addition to those awesome finds, MOTHER 3 Artist Nobuhiro Imagawa posted more drawings of the characters to celebrate the game’s 16th anniversary!

An interview with Brownie Brown from 2013 about their company legacy with a focus on Fantasy Life, and it even includes an image of their rough-draft GBA redesigns for Lucas, Claus, what may be Tazmily with a few character sprites, and more!

Scans of the February 1998 issue of Famimaga 64, 64 Dream scans from 1999 to 2000 courtesy of MyCom on archive.org, and a scan of a small mention of MOTHER 3 in the March 2000 issue of the 64 Dream.

For this scan release, Kody posted one excerpt of an interview with Itoi from May 2000. In this part of the interview, he discusses two things: Cabbage (his second N64DD project) and a port of the first MOTHER to the Game Boy.

Kody showcases scans of a guide to MOTHER published in the July 28, 1989 issue of Famicom, promotional articles called the MOTHER 2 Times, new scans from 1997 issues of Game Shounen and Famimaga about MOTHER 3 on the N64, and new enemy concept designs uploaded on Twitter by MOTHER 3 Event and Battle Designer Akiyuki Suzuki!

To celebrate this Direct, Kody posted some translations they made a few years ago from a book by Shigesato Itoi that inspired them to start translating back then. Ever heard of Let’s Meet in a Dream? The book was best described by Starmen.net veteran and translator extraordinaire Lindsay Moore on Yomuka! as “a collection of short-short stories (or perhaps short-short-short stories) by Haruki Murakami and Shigesato Itoi, originally published in 1981. The stories range from one to five pages long, although according to Murakami, these are not quite ‘stories.’ Rather, the book is just a collection of random, aimless pieces of light-hearted writing that Murakami and Itoi clearly enjoyed making.”

Hot off the heels of our Mother Direct last weekend, there was new MOTHER 2 concept art discovered in an older Nintendo Dream and a new high quality sound hack for MOTHER 3! Kody also showcased some Famitsu scans related to MOTHER 1+2 sent to them by PushDustIn!

Did you know Shigesato Itoi collaborated with Keiichi Suzuki and a bunch of other musical artists on more than just MOTHER and MOTHER 2? Introducing Penguinism, an album written by Itoi, and I managed to scan all parts of the album in high quality for the first time! And, following up from new MOTHER 2 concept art discovered a few weeks ago in Nintendo Dream Vol. 89, a caption with an image from page 18 seems to solve the mystery of the location depicted in the “War on Giygas” part of MOTHER 2’s opening.

Shogo Sakai mentions his retirement, new MOTHER 3 concept art was posted by a developer on Twitter, and see what Kody got at the Hobonichi Tobichi store in this Almost Monthly News for August 2022!

During the summer of 2022, Mother Forever conducted a survey in the MOTHER community that totaled 784 participants to gather data on what kinds of trends exist in the community (or at least as much of the community as we could reach). For the first time in a good while, a goldmine of new MOTHER 64 media has been uncovered. Graciously provided by a source who would like to remain anonymous, this collection of concept art from Benimaru “Ashura” Itoh comes from an October 1997 issue of 64 Dream.
