A young and gifted psychic boy from the humble township of Onett. From infancy, he displayed strange implications of otherworldly powers by moving inanimate objects with his mind. Ness’ hobbies include baseball and hanging out with the neighborhood kids in their secret clubhouse. He is well-liked among everyone in Onett, many seeing him as percipient when he holds his own against those older than him.

Paula Jones is a resourceful young girl from Twoson who has an ever-greater array of psychic abilities than Ness. Paula is the daughter of the owners of Polestar Preschool, where she is seen as a loving role model for the children. Everyone in the town of Twoson is aware of Paula’s gifted abilities, which often makes her the center of discussion among social groups.

The son of the highly-esteemed Dr. Andonuts, living in the small country of Winters. He was separated from his father at birth for unknown reasons and was raised at Snow Wood Boarding House. At a young age, he showed signs of the same technical prowess as his father, being able to fix almost any broken object he could get his hands on. Jeff is highly respected among his peers, his closest friends being his roommate Tony and older classmate Maxwell.

A prince from the far-away kingdom of Dalaam which sits above the clouds. When Poo is first introduced in the game, he is undergoing Mu training. Poo is popular with women in Dalaam, but he is totally oblivious to it.

Ness’ cowering next-door neighbor who is not very popular among the children in Onett. Pokey Minch (also translated as Porky Minch) is a bothersome child who gets into mischief in hopes of receiving attention from others. His parents, Lardna and Aloysius Minch, punish him brutally for his rampant actions, often having to apologize on his behalf. Is Pokey simply misunderstood, or is there something truly evil brewing within him…?

An eccentric young genius from Twoson who aids Ness and his friends on their quest by developing handy tools. He is a little messy and unassuming in appearance but has a heart of gold.

Jeff’s long-lost father who lives near the mystical Stonehenge in Winters. His intelligence rivals that of Albert Einstein, in creating a round-shaped spacecraft called the “Sky Runner”. As long as you give him a doughnut, Andonuts will do you any favor in mind.

A species of strange creatures who live in a village beyond a cave in Grapefruit Falls. Despite their humorous appearance and fractured language, they do in fact hold great wisdom.

A monkey with an acquired taste for bubblegum who assists Jeff temporarily. His greatest ambition is to find a nice girlfriend.

Tony is Jeff’s best friend from Snow Wood. While he may be somewhat timid, his honest and considerate personality makes him one of the most endearing allies in MOTHER 2. While never stated (though implied) in-game, Tony secretly has feelings for Jeff.

A traveling jazz band of not five, but six members, and who aren’t the best at making business decisions. Led by the Jake-and-Elwood-esque vocalists Nice and Lucky, they meet Ness and his friends a few times after the band makes some business blunders. If someone helped them out, they’ll definitely repay the favor, just not with any cash.

The cosmic alien overlord returns to once again invade the Earth as an act of vengeance in MOTHER 2. His manipulative influence has grown exponentially since the first MOTHER, this time being a greater threat than ever before.

An intelligent, sentient pile of puke who enslaves the colony of Mr. Saturn in his dreadful factory. He is one of Giygas’ right-hand men.
