MOTHER 3 N64 Characters

Much of the cast from the Nintendo 64 version of MOTHER 3 were introduced to the fans while still being in development. Below is a list of that cast with an image gallery for each respective character.

Flint

Flint is the father of the twins Lucas and Claus, both of which he raises with his gorgeous wife, Hinawa. Among everyone in the village of Tazmily, Flint is one of the most reliable and respectable people despite his intimidating appearance. When a strange object appeared in a nearby cove, Flint was the first to set off and investigate in order to protect the village and his family, beginning the story.

Lucas

Lucas is the main character of MOTHER 3. He is often found picking mushrooms in the Sunshine Forest, and is described as “a gentle child who likes flowers and small birds”. Lucas is the son of Flint, and has a twin brother named Claus. In early promotional materials, Lucas was seen as brunette and wearing a colorful poncho, looking much more align to a traditional MOTHER protagonist. His appearance would later change to be more like the timid, blonde-haired child he’s known as today.

Claus

Claus is Lucas’ twin brother, who, despite his identical appearance, has nearly the opposite personality. Claus is restless and daunting, often found socializing with the other children in Tazmily Village. His favourite thing is anything cool and/or “high-tech”. Despite his chestnut hair, the Tazmillians still have a difficult time telling the two brothers apart. Like Lucas, Claus is inspired by a character of the same name in Agota’s Kristof’s The Notebook trilogy, sharing a more “brash” personality when compared to his twin brother Lucas.

Boney

Boney is Flint’s family dog, born only a year before the events of MOTHER 3. He was named by Claus, and is loved by everyone in the village. The community often refers to Boney as different names, such as “John” or “Benjamin”, whether by mistake or due to their own sense of ownership for the cheerful dog. He is often found wherever the action is, signifying him as more courageous a companion than found in the previous MOTHER games.

Hinawa

Hinawa, Flint’s wife and the twins’ mother, occasionally appeared in promotional material for MOTHER 3 on the N64.

Alec

Hinawa’s father and the twins’ grandfather in the final version of MOTHER 3, Alec, seems to have never been shown during the game’s life on the N64. In 2022 however, an anonymous developer for the N64 version of the game confirmed to Mother Forever that Alec existed at that point in development.

Duster

Duster is one of the main protagonists unrelated to Lucas and his family. He is an anti-social night owl often spotted wandering around Tazmily past nightfall. He lives in the outskirts of the village with his father, Wess, who is a master of strange arts. Eventually, during the course of the story, Duster becomes the bassist for the band D.C.M.C. under the stage-name Lucky. In early promotional materials, Duster had spiky-blonde hair and a green cap, but his appearance later changed to be brunette with a blue cap, more closely resembling modern Duster.

Wess

Wess is Duster’s father, who specializes in strange arts. Whatever knowledge he possesses seems unknown to the villagers of Tazmily. He accompanies his son on adventures in Osohe Castle where they battle the Pigmask Army.

Kumatora

Kumatora is an enigmatic young woman who remained anonymous for much of MOTHER 3’s development on the N64. Even in this version, she accompanied Lucas as a party member. During the course of the story, she can be found as the waitress at Club Titiboo.

Salsa

A somersaulting monkey who arrives in Tazmily Village with his mysterious owner.

Fassad

Salsa’s owner, who sports odd clothing and an unwelcoming face. He arrives in Tazmily in order to sell a special item, proudly displaying his “showman” act.

Dr. Andonuts

The eccentric scientist from MOTHER 2 was slated to make a re-appearance in 3, this time questionably creating inventions for the Pigmask Army. One of these creations is outlined as an “ice-cream cone” shaped drill in the desert, though its purpose remains unknown.

Mr. Saturn

The Mr. Saturn species and their iconic village were also planned to return in MOTHER 3. However, this time around they were also going to be accompanied by another strange species of “crying characters” also inspired by the handwriting of Shigesato Itoi’s daughter.

Dragos

A friendly species of dragons that reside within the world of MOTHER 3. Lucas, with his affinity for nature, seems to have built a special relationship with the Dragos, as he is often seen riding them around as transport.

Lighter and Fuel

Lighter and his son Fuel are a pair of lumberjacks in Tazmily Village. They are an inseparable duo who are quite ambitious in their trade, developing the first functioning wooden wheel in Tazmily. Sometime before the events of the game, they disappeared on a fishing boat five kilometers offshore near Great Scale Village, but were thankfully rescued. However, Lighter’s wife Tobacco wasn’t found…

Nana and Papa

Papa, a forty-year-old sailor, and his daughter Nana are close friends of Lucas’ family, living west of Tazmily. Nana is quite shy and short of words, but enjoys the company of the twins regardless. A year and a half before the events of MOTHER 3, Papa went missing one morning, the only trinket left behind being the photo seen above.

Isaac

A twenty-one year-old bodybuilder and champion woodcutter in Tazmily. Isaac seems to spends much of his time jogging in the forest! One day while picking mushrooms in the Sunshine Forest, Isaac spotted an unidentified object, followed by the emergence of a group of strangely-dressed people.

P.K. Pirkle

Despite sharing a similar name with B.H. Pirkle in EarthBound (or G.H. Pirkle in MOTHER 2), P.K. Pirkle in MOTHER 3 N64 has a different personality. While Pirkle sometimes may come across as stern in his attempt to relieve the villager’s worries (such as the rumor of zombies appearing in Sunset Cemetery), his heart comes from the right place. He lives in the villas north of town square with his large family, though he can often be found hanging around the square itself. Just like the bald head jokes in “G.H.” and “B.H.” Pirkle, “P.K.” is a pun on the Japanese word “pika,” a word used for something that’s so clean it sparkles.

Lisa

Lisa is a ditzy young woman who helps run the general store in Tazmily, owned by Thomas. Her mind is oddly scatterbrained; for example, if you address her as “Lisa” she will reject you in assurance that she is not Lisa. I wonder what will happen if you ask her on a date?

Thomas

Thomas is the proud owner of the general store in Tazmily Village. He likes to make deals trading his items for unusually large acorns found in the forest, which he admires for their “smooth texture”.

Bell Ringer

One of the oldest (and tallest) residents of Tazmily, who is quite solemn and introverted. His duty is to ring a bell tower called “The Bell of Repose” at two hour intervals, which plays a peaceful melody throughout the village every day.

Richie and Nichol

Brother and sister, Richie (left) and Nichol (right), are usually seen hanging around together in Tazmily. One day they were exploring the forest together and got lost, but were found and brought home by a strange purple creature resembling the friendly Dragos.

Butch

A fifteen year-old pig farmer who resides within Tazmily. He is quite boisterous and proud of his pigs, by which he won the Top Breeder award for. He has a mother named Bar who likes to knit sweaters for the villagers during the winter season.

The Syd Family

One of the oldest families in Tazmily Village. From left to right: Scamp, Alle, Nan, and Ed. Scamp, being one of the eldest residents of Tazmily, holds on to the hope that he will live long enough to see his grandson grow up, with the family agreeing newborns such as Alle are the future of the village.

Ionia

An androgynous fortune-teller who seems to have captured the spirits of the Tazmillians through the display of their mysterious powers. They claim to be proficient in the ancient power of “PSI”, even awakening the same power in some of their doubtful customers. What is the mystery behind them?

D.C.M.C.

A hot new band that plays at Club Titiboo, which is found in the center of Shimedori Forest. The name stands for “Desperado Crush Mambo Combo”. Their motto is “Cool is hot, hot is cool”, and their hit new single “Bon Voyage, Amigo” has swept the charts. Magic Zildjian (real name: Rodrigo Rodriguez) plays the drums, Baccio Trumpman plays the sax, Shimmy Zmizz on keyboard, and O.J. Hagii on guitar. They had long searched for a bass player, eventually recruiting Duster from Tazmily Village under the name “Tamekichi”.

Mr. Yottore

A strange species living in Shimedori Forest who had their design revealed by designer Toshinao Aoki during 2020 in Hobonichi’s MOTHER fan comic book, Pollyanna. The name “Mr. Yottore” was revealed in a Twitter thread between Aoki and composer Shogo Sakai in Japanese as “よっとれさん” or “Yottoresan.”

Claymen

A race of artificial slaves created by the Pigmask Army. They are put to hard labour in a factory, hoping to be set free one day. That dream is realized when one of the Claymen washes up on shore in a nearby creek.

The Pigmask Army

Originally known as the “Buhei” (“Pig Warriors”) in early promotional material, the Pigmask Army are the main antagonistic organization faced in the game. Worshipping the mysterious titular “Pig King”, they have arrived in the world of MOTHER 64 in order to enslave it with their wide array of strange machinery. Many ranks of Pigmasks can be found, the most common being the grey-clothed Sergeant who wields a spear, all the way up to the prideful red-clothed Lieutenants who wield a sword.

Porky Minch

Porky’s presence in MOTHER 64 had remained transparent, yet secretive all the same since the initial announcement in 1996. According to art director Benimaru Itoh, an older Porky “…has found himself trapped in a far away era he hastily escaped to, and part of MOTHER 3 follows his story.” Though never confirmed, it is believed the “Pig King” in the subtitle refers to Porky himself, who is the leader of the Pigmask Army.
