The Flying Man (MOTHER OST) – Louis Philippe 1986

Louis Philippe makes mention to his good friend Keiichi Suzuki about involving him to assist with writing the music of MOTHER. Philippe was delighted to help Suzuki with the tracks and contributed his own vocal arrangements for the album versions of the MOTHER OST. Unfortunately, this song never reached its way to MOTHER, but it does appear in the MOTHER album, and years later the song would soon be included in the soundtrack of MOTHER 2. Included here is a listing for the lyrics of the song, ‘Flying Man’, as well as additional information regarding the Flying Man in MOTHER and MOTHER 2.

Famicom Hisshou Hon – May 19,1989

Within this interview, Itoi really lays down the initial inspirational concepts, such as one of his inspirations for the game being 2001: A Space Odyessy which influenced the logo design for MOTHER but also the company name APE. He explains that MOTHER started in the negatives and worked its way back to the number zero, clarifying that many of the people in towns and cities in MOTHER would often look down on the protagonist and suggest that they’re too young to be a hero, sparking this rebellious childlike attitude with the player and the protagonist’s connections. He also believes that elements like Magicant would have left MOTHER incomplete, these sorts of connections drawn to a fantasy-like setting such as Magicant is what kept the plot and ideals going in the creation of MOTHER.

1989 MOTHER Interview by shumuplations

According to Itoi in this particular interview, he states that he wanted to share his creation with his closest friends and that he wanted to play his own game, too. He mentioned that he was somewhat obsessed with playing video games on the Famicom, and that meeting Shigeru Miyamoto about MOTHER revealed that he wasn’t really impressed with the ideas at hand. Miyamoto mentored him about the game’s plot and mechanics, and Itoi took that to heart. In this interview, Itoi speaks about how the development of MOTHER took some significant time to get a team started, and that developing the game was quite tough, and that he was compared to Takeshi Kitano in some aspects.
