MOTHER 3: OPPOSING FORCE

The first story hack for MOTHER 3 featuring a new take on the original game’s events from the perspective of the Pigmask Army!

Before downloading, please keep this in mind that since this is the first story hack, there might be some bugs, and keep the game’s hardware limitations in mind. Because of those limitations, you’ll have to change save files at the end of each segment to continue the story. Read about how to do this below along with a list of known bugs, softlocks, and an installation guide! A download can be found at the end, after all the lists and the guide.

Known General Bugs

  • Not all menu palettes are correct for the characters.
  • The intro logos are jumbled.
  • Fassad and the Masked Man don’t have KO’d sprites in the overworld.
  • Leaving some hot springs will glitch a character’s sprite. This can be fixed by opening and closing the Status menu.
  • The Sound Player just doesn’t work. Don’t go there. The new songs will be uploaded online in higher quality!

Known Save-specific Bugs

Save Collection 1, Slot 1:

  • Skirting along the upper or lower edge of the bridge with the Pork Bean seems to bug out a scripted cutscene. For safety, try to remain in the middle of the bridge.
  • This same event may also make one of your party members disappear in the overworld. Open and close the Status menu to fix this.

Known Softlocks (Don’t do this stuff!)

Save Collection 1, Slot 2:

  • Interacting directly with Hinawa’s grave.
  • Using the binoculars.

Save Collection 2, Slot 1:

  • Interacting with the empty Yo-yo display case directly.

Save Collection 3, Slot 1:

  • Going to the Wall Staple cliffside at the top of the map.

Installation Guide

  • You should have a Version 1.0 Japanese ROM of MOTHER 3 to patch this onto. You can use your favorite GBA UPS if you have one, but we recommend Romhacking.net’s online patcher. Once you have applied the patch, your resulting ROM should be in English and have the title screen changed to MOTHER 3: OPPOSING FORCE, and if it isn’t, something went wrong.
  • From here, refer to the folder of Save Collections that should have been provided with this patch.
  • Name your ROM to something simple, like M3OP.gba
  • Now, rename SaveCollection1.sav to M3OP.sav (or whatever you named your ROM)
  • Put both of these files into the same folder. When you restart the game, you should see a LOAD option in the middle of the title screen. Select that and load the first slot.
  • Do NOT start a NEW GAME. This will not work. Congratulations, if you loaded into the factory, you’ve got it working!
  • Whenever you are asked to load the second slot of a Save Collection, restart the game and once again go to the LOAD menu, this time selecting the lower, second slot. When you are asked to load the next Save Collection, rename the .sav file you are currently using to something that does not match the name of your ROM. Then, rename whatever Save Collection that comes next to match the name of your ROM.
  • Put them in the same folder, restart the game, and voila! You should have a new pair of Save Slots in the LOAD menu.

Message from the Director, moon man

Thank you for checking out this hack. The OST will be uploaded online, and more resources will be provided in due time. The hacking scene for this game is starting to steadily grow and I hope this hack inspires other people to give it their shot.
I hope you have fun with the various new playable characters, find the dialogue interesting, and come out with a neat experience. If you want to use anything from this hack or build off it, don’t even bother asking just go ahead and do it. Although, building off of this hack may be rather difficult considering how it’s barely held together honestly. Good luck with everything.
