MOTHER 3 N64 Merchandise

Benimaru Itoh’s art sure is on fire!

Believe it or not, although MOTHER 64 may not have been released, it did indeed have some merchandise created during its lifespan. The items listed below may in fact be the rarest among the entire MOTHER catalog, so don’t cross your fingers hoping to find an eBay listing anytime soon!

In preparation for Spaceworld 1997, the MOTHER 64 development team had D.C.M.C. shirts created, which were designed by the game’s conceptual artist, Benimaru Itoh. The shirt came in variations of black and red, both plastered with the band’s motto, “Cool is hot, hot is cool”. Thankfully, the team had extras made just for the fans! The first batch was made available through a mail-in to the magazine 64 Dream in December of 1997, though it’s the second account that is truly interesting. In the thirteenth issue of the “MOTHER 3 Times” in the Dengeki Nintendo 64 magazine, a contest to win one of these shirts was announced by D.C.M.C. band leader, Shimmy Zmizz, who said, “I will gift this shirt to one lucky person! The person receiving it will be quite happy!”.

By May 10th, 1999, readers of the “MOTHER 3 Times” could send in their illustration of a tractor to enter the contest (tying into the theme of that issue, which featured Tazmily’s livestock), with only one winner being chosen. While it is unknown who won this contest, in December of 2015 one of these red D.C.M.C. shirts surfaced on Yahoo Auctions Japan, selling for $2500 USD. The auction winner proudly took some photos upon receiving it, displaying the art in greater quality than ever before.

Ready to decorate your N64 controller with some MOTHER flair? If you can find these, that is!

If you thought the shirt was the only MOTHER 64 merchandise available through 64 Dream, you’d be surprised to learn that stickers were also made exclusively for their Spaceworld 1999 feature. These stickers were placed among a collection of other games playable at Spaceworld 1999, including The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, all displaying art from the event. The stickers for MOTHER 64, in particular, are lifted from both the Spaceworld brochure and website, being some of the most recognizable images of the game.

These two items are the only pieces of merchandise for MOTHER 64 that were confirmed made, or at least available to the public thus far. While other issues of Dengeki Nintendo 64 feature mockups, one example being some rockin’ shoes resembling Lucas’ own pair of runners, it’s unfortunately unknown if these made it past the conceptual phase. One after another, more chapters are added on to the mystery of the canceled MOTHER 64!
