Ninten’s Awakening: MOTHER Reimagining by Ezequiel!

Ask any MOTHER fan what they thought back when the Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake was announced, and it’s likely you’ll hear the same thing – “My gosh! It looks just like a MOTHER game!”

Surprisingly, that sentiment was not only limited to MOTHER fans, as many content creators and media outlets also drew comparisons from it’s art direction. Predictably, it inspired many to ponder if perhaps a MOTHER remake on the Nintendo Switch would be tackled in a similar visual style. At last, today a fellow fan has given us a glimpse of what that could look like!

Ezequiel is the co-founder and lead artist of Pizia Studios, and there’s no denying his incredible artistic talent seen in the previews of his upcoming game Hayaku. While his primary focus is pixel art, his 3D modelling skills are astonishingly impressive as well! On March 13th, he posted his own reimagining of the original MOTHER on Nintendo Switch, heavily inspired by Link’s Awakening. It displays the same fixed angle perspective, but instead of plastic dolls, Ezequiel took it one step further by emulating the clay models seen in the promotional material for the MOTHER games! You can zoom in on any one of his images and you’ll be amazed by the attention to detail. Just take a look at the fantastic clay mold textures, fingerprints smudges and impressive sheen decorated over his models. Not only does it accurately bring the Famicom game to life, but his vision undeniably adds something unique as well.

Check out Ezequiel’s original Tweet down below, and feel free to share his incredible proof of concept! Hopefully one day down the road, we’ll see MOTHER reimagined in a modern style similar to what he has in mind. After all, The Hobonichi MOTHER Project has opened the doors to the series’ future, so keep your fingers crossed!
