YOU Talk Show

YOU was a talk show for young people that aired on NHK Educational Television from April 10, 1982 to April 4, 1987 and played from 10:30 until 11:30 on Saturday nights.

When NHK was in need of a program that would be rated higher than the show they were currently running, Young People’s Plaza, a planning committee was made to create the show YOU. Of over 100 applicants, Shigesato Itoi was chosen as the new show’s host. Itoi suggested that the show should be aimed towards high school students. It grew in popularity with young people within three months of launching and laid the foundation for NHK’s youth-oriented programs.

When Itoi hosted the show until 1985, an intro illustrated by Katsuhiro Otomo, now famous for works like Akira, played with music by Ryuichi Sakamoto.
